The first season had been expertly presented by Jonathan Ross, and the second and third seasons after that were hosted by female host Alyson.
Each episode starts off with the introduction stating the reason for the series. Penn & Teller come out and are seated at the stage. The hopeful magicians perform their acts before them in front of a an audience of live viewers. Following each show, Penn & Teller privately talk while the host interview the magicians. Penn & Teller then reveal whether they are aware of how the trick was executed, usually using cryptic words or by noting down the procedure and presenting it privately to the magicians to confirm, the method, in order to avoid divulging the secret behind the trick.
The fourth season will premiere October 23, 2022.
What’s New with Penn & Teller— Fool Us?
Fool Us was filmed at Fountain Studios in London, England (season one) and at the Penn and Teller Theater located in Las Vegas (season two onward). Following each show, if Penn & Teller cannot figure out how the trick was done, and the magician(s) who performed the trick are awarded the Fool Us trophy and a five-star flight in Las Vegas to perform as the opening act of Penn & Teller’s show which is also held at the Rio Hotel & Casino. The fourth season debuted on the 1st of October 2021.
Teller states that doublespeak can help people learn new tricks without compromising the trick. Should Penn & Teller are wrong, or cannot figure out the method used to perform the trick, the magician is awarded the Fool Us trophy and the opportunity to later perform at one of Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas shows. A backstage judge, who is well-versed in the techniques of the magic business and intimately aware of about the method used to perform the trick before the performance, makes needed calls to determine if Penn & Teller were properly fooled. After each episode, Penn & Teller perform an act of magic on their own.
Penn and Teller have a friendship with the magicians who appear on their show. The hosting tasks were temporarily handled by Jonathan Ross in the first season, however they were back to host the show from season two onward. From Season 3 onward, from season three, the top performers of the season who have successfully fooled Penn and Teller are invited back for an episode special of Fool Us in which they each get to show off their tricks again and attempt to fool Penn and Teller for an additional $20,000 prize. Teller remains hushed throughout the the show, however they do communicate through subtle gestures to each other. They have been known to talk with magicians and ask them to repeat certain movements or provide more information.
